An Indian man in Vietnam narrowly escaped death after inserting a live eel into his anus. According to Vietnam News, the eel caused significant damage by chewing through his intestines and had to be surgically removed from his abdomen.

On July 27, the 31-year-old Indian man arrived at Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi with severe abdominal pain. It was discovered that he had inserted a 2-foot live eel into his anus earlier that day.

The patient underwent a series of tests, including an ultrasound, X-ray, and various imaging procedures, which revealed the eel’s skeleton lodged in his abdominal cavity.

A specialized team of endoscopy experts and anesthesiologists was assembled to remove the eel. Their initial attempt to extract it through the anus was hindered by a large lemon that the patient had inserted after the eel, which was obstructing their access.

The team then proceeded with emergency surgery. Upon opening the abdomen, they found the live eel, approximately 65 cm long and 10 cm in circumference.

“The eel had bitten through the patient’s rectum and colon to enter the abdominal cavity,” explained Le Nhat Huy, Vice Director of the Department of Colorectal and Perineal Surgery.

The doctors successfully removed both the eel and the lemon, ensured no additional foreign objects were present, and then sutured the patient.

Huy cautioned, “Eels can survive in anaerobic conditions for a long time and have the ability to bite through the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, people should never insert live animals through the anus to seek intense sensations due to the unforeseeable consequences.”

This incident is notably similar to a case earlier this year in Vietnam, where doctors removed an eel from a 43-year-old man’s abdomen, believed to have entered through his anus.
