In a pointed speech at the No Kings protest in Washington, former MSNBC broadcaster Mehdi Hasan directed sharp criticism at President Donald Trump. The main question now is: With the deal gone, can a new plan be created to control Iran’s nuclear program and stop tensions in the region from rising?

What Was the Irony Hasan Pointed Out?

Hasan’s critique centered on Trump’s lineage and personal life. “The great irony is, of course, that Donald Trump is the son of an immigrant, the grandson of an immigrant, and married to an immigrant,” Hasan told the crowd. He then delivered his punchline, adding, “In fact, two of his three wives were immigrants, proving yet again that immigrants will do the jobs that even Americans are not willing to do.” This remark was a clear satire of anti-immigration rhetoric, suggesting that marrying Trump was a job native-born Americans avoided.

How Did Hasan Describe Immigrant Patriotism?

The broadcaster went beyond the joke to make a deeper point about national belonging. He argued that immigrants often possess a unique and powerful love for the United States. “And we immigrants, we love this country often more than the people who are born here because we chose to move here, live here, swear an oath to the Constitution here,” Hasan stated. The remark presented immigration as a voluntary act that strengthens one’s bond with the nation, opposing stories that question immigrants’ faithfulness.

What Was the Context of Trump’s Own Family?

Hasan’s comments were grounded in publicly known facts. Donald Trump’s first wife, Ivana Trump, was an immigrant from the former Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic. His third wife, First Lady Melania Trump, is an immigrant from Slovenia. This personal history has frequently been cited by critics who see a contradiction between Trump’s family story and his political policies and rhetoric concerning immigration.

What Parallel Action Did Trump Take?

Simultaneously, Donald Trump himself made headlines with a major foreign policy announcement. On his social media platform, Truth Social, he declared an immediate end to all U.S. “large scale payments and subsidies” to Colombia. He justified this drastic move by personally attacking the nation’s leader, President Gustavo Petro, whom he labeled an “illegal drug leader.” Trump accused Petro of doing “nothing to stop” drug production, which he claimed was purposefully targeting the United States.
