From Grapes to Condoms: Unusual Items India Ordered on New Year’s Eve

As India welcomed 2025, quick-commerce platforms experienced a massive surge in demand, underscoring the nation’s growing dependence on instant delivery services. Platforms like Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart revealed a fascinating mix of top-ordered items ranging from party essentials to unexpected products, showcasing their role in shaping New Year celebrations.

Blinkit co-founder Albinder Dhindsa shared on New Year’s Eve that grapes emerged as one of the platform’s most-ordered items since Tuesday morning.

“We’ve already delivered 7x more grapes than we do on a regular day. And thank you to everyone who explained the tradition in the replies,” Dhindsa said.

Other popular orders included chips, soda, aloo bhujia, ice cubes, lipsticks, and lighters. Dhindsa also noted an unexpected trend: “Another product which I didn’t expect will be ordered in high quantities – men’s underwear.”

Mineral water bottles, condoms, and Eno saw significant demand, while orders for lemons peaked around 10 PM.

On Swiggy Instamart, trending searches for the evening included milk, chips, chocolates, and paneer, alongside grapes. The platform reported a national frenzy for snacks and beverages, with chips, cold drinks, and soda emerging as the top-selling items. Snack sales, especially chips and nachos, soared by over 300 percent, with over 5 lakh packets of chips sold.

Swiggy co-founder Phani Kishan highlighted the popularity of beverages, sharing that “1 in every 8 orders was for a cold drink,” with cola soft drink sales jumping by 394 percent and clear soft drinks seeing a staggering 941 percent increase. Non-alcoholic beers stole the spotlight with an extraordinary rise of 1541.72 percent.

Additionally, people indulged in games and puzzles, with orders for these items increasing by 600 percent. Uno, in particular, reigned supreme as the most popular game of the night.
