Princess Märtha Louise of Norway has hit back at persistent rumours suggesting her marriage to self-proclaimed shaman Durek Verrett is a “lavender marriage.” In popular culture, a lavender marriage refers to a union between two homosexual partners entered into to conceal their sexual orientation.

The royal, who married Verrett on August 31, 2024, addressed the speculation head-on through a humorous Instagram video — one that blended royal charm with millennial wit.

What triggered the “lavender marriage” conversation?

After a number of social media users questioned the nature of the royal couple’s relationship, the conversation started. Some even accused them of pretending to be in love.

In her recent video, Märtha Louise cleverly plays along with these comments. The clip opens with the question: “What’s a Lavender Marriage?” The Princess and Verrett appear in lavender-coloured outfits, reading comments like, “Girl, I don’t know if you know, but you are in a lavender marriage.”

Moments later, the mood shifts — they exchange confused glances, shrug, and then appear in vibrant, multicoloured clothes, as Verrett dances playfully beside her. The final bubble reads, “Ordinary isn’t our thing. We just love.” The post’s caption seals the message:

“Thought it was lavender? Plot twist. It’s just love and legacy.”

Who is Princess Märtha Louise?

Norwegian King Harald V’s eldest child is 52-year-old Princess Märtha Louise. Well-known for her spiritual pursuits and unorthodox royal persona, she has frequently been the focus of attention due to her decisions that deviate from accepted royal conventions.

She was previously married to the late writer and artist Ari Behn, with whom she shares three daughters. Her marriage to Verrett made headlines not just in Norway but globally — featuring in Netflix’s “Rebel Royals: An Unlikely Love Story”, released in 2024.

Who is Shaman Durek Verrett?

Verrett, who identifies as bisexual, was married earlier to Zaneta Marzalkova (2005–2009). He calls himself a sixth-generation shaman and a “servant of God and energy activator.” Both he and Märtha claim to be clairvoyants, saying they can communicate with spirits and energies.

One of Verrett’s more controversial claims is that he “rose from the dead.” He says he died of renal failure in 2002 but came back to life — a turning point that, according to him, set him on his spiritual journey.

He often holds healing sessions for clients, but reports, including one by Vanity Fair, have raised eyebrows at the nature of his waivers, which include consenting to “energy healing, toxin release, and physical touch,” among other unconventional practices.

What does the Princess say about her marriage?

Despite all the noise, Märtha Louise continues to defend her husband and their relationship. Last month, during an interview with Today.com, she revealed: “Being married is amazing, especially when you’re married to the love of your life.”

Her words, paired with the recent Instagram post, reflect a consistent message, that their union is genuine, unconventional, and deeply personal. The Princess appears committed to stifling rumors while embracing her own truth, one that is vibrant, brave, and resolute, through humor and genuineness.
