Deepak, a 24-year-old labourer working in Dubai, returned to Punjab a month ago, eager to marry Manpreet Kaur, a woman he met on Instagram three years ago. Donning a bright red turban, Deepak set off on Friday with a baraat of over 150 guests from Mandiali village in Jalandhar to Moga city. His car, adorned with flowers, led the procession to what was supposed to be a joyous wedding.
The couple, who developed a long-distance relationship over Instagram, had decided to marry after their parents spoke over the phone. Deepak was asked by Manpreet and her family to bring a baraat with at least 150 guests for the December 6 wedding.
However, upon reaching Moga, the groom found neither the bride nor the venue. Despite repeated attempts to contact Manpreet, she initially answered and promised her relatives would guide them to the venue. By 5 PM, however, her phone was switched off, leaving the baraat stranded for hours.
Frustrated and heartbroken, Deepak and his family approached the local police to file a complaint against Manpreet and her family. In his statement, Deepak revealed that he had never met Manpreet in person, only seeing her photos on Instagram. She had claimed to be a lawyer with a lucrative job in Ferozepur. Deepak also alleged he transferred ₹50,000 to her for wedding expenses.
The groom stated Manpreet had mentioned a venue named ‘Rose Garden Palace,’ but upon arrival, they were told no such place existed, adding another twist to the ordeal.
