Bihar MLA Vibha Devi: The Viral Oath Struggle
During the official ceremony where all new MLAs took their oaths on December 1, a video clip of Vibha Devi, the newly elected Janata Dal (United) MLA from the Nawada constituency, quickly went viral.
A sitting MLA is unable to read her own oath clearly. It’s ironic that in a country where even a peon is required to have a matriculation certificate for a govt job, our MPs and MLAs face no mandatory educational qualification whatsoever.

The short clip showed the politician clearly struggling and repeatedly stumbling over the words of her oath. She looked stressed and eventually had to turn to the MLA next to her, Manorama Devi, for help, who prompted her through the rest of the text.
Bihar Oath Ceremony: Mandatory Education for MLAs?
This embarrassing moment immediately started a large conversation on social media and in the public sphere. Many citizens and commentators began asking a critical question: Should there be a minimum educational qualification made mandatory for people who want to become MLAs or MPs in India?
Critics argue that if a politician struggles to read a simple oath, how can they effectively understand and manage complex state policies, budgets, and legislation for the public?

Nawada Constituency MLA Winner 2025
Vibha Devi is not new to the powerful politics of Bihar. She won the Nawada seat and is the wife of former legislator and current jailed strongman, Raj Ballabh Yadav.
Her election affidavit for the 2025 polls showed her to be extremely wealthy. She declared total assets of around ₹31 crore and an annual income of ₹1.1 crore, with liabilities valued at ₹5.2 crore.
This huge financial status throws the focus onto the difference between a politician’s wealth and their apparent literacy level.
Where is Nawada located?
The Nawada constituency, which Vibha Devi represents, is located in the Magadh region of South Bihar. It is the administrative headquarters of the Nawada district and sits on the banks of the Khuri River.
It shares borders with other Bihar districts like Gaya, Nalanda, and Jamui and is a key area historically connected to the ancient Magadh Empire.
