Actor Vijay’s leap into Tamil Nadu’s political arena with his party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), has generated significant debate among the state’s established political entities, notably the ruling DMK and the main opposition, AIADMK. Vijay, a prominent figure in Tamil cinema, has gained substantial popularity across various demographics, making his political venture a much-discussed development.
The DMK has responded to TVK’s emergence with both skepticism and subtle acknowledgment of Vijay’s influence. A senior DMK leader remarked, “Tamil Nadu politics has seen many contenders rise and fall. We’re not threatened by a new party claiming to carry on people’s rights. Our party’s commitment to the welfare of the Tamil people is over seven decades old, and that legacy won’t be easily overshadowed.” The DMK, long established as a champion of Tamil identity and social justice, suggests that TVK’s policy agenda largely echoes its principles without offering anything distinctly new. Yet, by addressing TVK directly, the DMK appears to recognize Vijay’s potential to draw support from younger, apolitical voters and first-time voters who have been captivated by his star power and straightforward messaging.
On the other side of the aisle, AIADMK leaders have expressed skepticism regarding TVK’s ideological foundation, describing it as a “repackaging” of familiar Dravidian values rather than a genuine alternative. One AIADMK spokesperson said, “TVK’s stance feels like old wine in a new bottle. They speak of people’s empowerment, but these are ideals that both the DMK and AIADMK have upheld for decades.” According to AIADMK’s critique, Vijay’s popularity in cinema may not necessarily translate to a viable political movement, as his experience and depth in policy remain untested.
TVK’s potential impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape is complicated further by other parties in the state. The BJP, hoping to expand its footprint in Tamil Nadu, sees the actor’s entry as a possible disruptor. A BJP spokesperson commented, “If TVK gains traction, it may split the Dravidian vote, which could open doors for other parties to play a more influential role in the region.” This statement hints at the BJP’s long-term strategic interest in leveraging new parties to weaken the longstanding dominance of Dravidian politics.
The Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK), led by Seeman, has made it clear that they do not see TVK as a potential ally. In a recent statement, Seeman asserted, “Our vision for Tamil Nadu is rooted in a strong, distinct ideology. We’re not interested in alliances with new players who seem undecided about their direction.” NTK’s position highlights the competitive nature of Tamil Nadu’s political environment, where parties vying for similar voter bases are wary of sharing influence.
Vijay, however, remains focused on his vision. Addressing a crowd recently, he said, “TVK is here to give Tamil Nadu an alternative, a choice beyond the status quo. Our goal is to empower every Tamilian, not by words but through action.” His statements resonate with a younger generation disillusioned by conventional politics, and he has announced plans for a rigorous campaign targeting the 2026 state elections.

As TVK builds its base, Vijay’s challenge will be to prove that his popularity can extend beyond cinema and foster a sustainable political movement. His journey may redefine Tamil Nadu’s political dynamics or, as some critics predict, serve as yet another example of celebrity-driven politics that fizzles without substantive change.
