Opposition’s Vice Presidential candidate Margaret Alva filed her nomination on Tuesday in the Parliament House complex. During her nomination, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallika Arjun Kharge, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and many senior opposition leaders were present.
There was a meeting of opposition parties at NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s home last Sunday, after which Sharad Pawar announced the name of Margaret Alva for the Vice Presidential elections. “We have unanimously decided to field Margaret Alva as our joint candidate for the Vice President.”
Shrimat Alva has been the former governor of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Goa, Gujarat and has held several ministries in the central government. She has also been a minister and a Member of Parliament five times, and Alva also held the post of Deputy Speaker of Rajya Sabha.
Meanwhile, the ruling BJP has nominated Jagdeep Dhankar, the Governor of West Bengal, as its Vice Presidential candidate. On Monday, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi Jagdeep Dhankar filed his nomination.
After filing the nomination, Dhankar said, “Not even in my dreams did I think that a common man like me would be given such an opportunity. A farmer’s son has filed his nomination today… Grateful to PM Modi and the leadership for this opportunity.”
However, the term of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu will end on August 10, 2022. The Vice Presidential elections will be held on August 6, 2022.
