Veteran actress Smriti Biswas, known for her roles in Hindi, Marathi, and Bengali cinema, passed away at her residence in Nashik, Maharashtra, sources confirmed on Thursday. She died late on Wednesday night due to age-related issues. Smriti, aged 100, had been living in a small rented flat in Nashik Road area.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta paid tribute to Smriti Biswas on Instagram on Thursday, sharing recent and old photos of the actress and bidding her farewell. He wrote, “Go away in peace and to a happier place, dear Smritiji. Thank you for blessing our lives. RIP Smriti Biswas.”

Starting her career as a child artist, Smriti Biswas appeared in films by renowned directors such as Guru Dutt, V Shantaram, Mrinal Sen, Bimal Roy, BR Chopra, and Raj Kapoor. She starred alongside actors like Dev Anand, Kishore Kumar, and Balraj Sahni in various films. Her debut was in the Bengali film “Sandhya” (1930), and her last Hindi film was “Model Girl” (1960). After marrying filmmaker S D Narang, she retired from acting.

Following her husband’s death, Smriti moved to Nashik. She celebrated her 100th birthday on February 17, 2024. She is survived by her two sons, Rajeev and Satyajeet, according to sources.
