Uttarakhand Transport and Social Welfare Minister Chandan Ram Das died on Wednesday after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest, according to state officials. According to Bageshewar’s chief medical officer, DP Joshi, he died at Bageshewar District Hospital, where he was admitted after complaining of chest pain.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Sing Dhami expressed shock at his death, calling it an irreparable loss in public service and politics. “I am shocked by the sudden death of my senior colleague in the cabinet, Shri Chandan Ram Das ji.”

In the fields of public service and politics, his death is an irreparable loss. May God grant the pious soul a place at his holy feet, as well as strength to his family and supporters in bearing this enormous suffering. “Om Shanti,” the chief minister wrote on Twitter.

This afternoon, he was taken to the district hospital. According to hospital officials, his condition was such that he could not have been transferred to another hospital via air ambulance. They went on to say that despite all efforts to save his life, he died of cardiac arrest.

Since 2007, Chandan Ram has represented the Bageshwar constituency in the Uttarakhand assembly for four consecutive terms. Following his death, the state government declared three days of official mourning until April 28, and all government offices and public sector banks will be closed on Wednesday.
