The world’s population will grow by more than 71 million people in 2024, reaching 8.09 billion on New Year’s Day, according to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. This marks a 0.9% increase, which is slightly slower than the 75 million added in 2023. By January 2025, the global population is expected to see 4.2 births and 2.0 deaths every second.

In the United States, the population will rise by 2.6 million in 2024, bringing the total to 341 million on New Year’s Day. By January 2025, the U.S. will experience one birth every 9 seconds, one death every 9.4 seconds, and one new international migrant every 23.2 seconds. As a result, the U.S. population will increase by one person every 21.2 seconds, combining the effects of births, deaths, and migration.

So far this decade, the U.S. population has grown by nearly 9.7 million people, or a 2.9% increase. This is higher than the 7.4% growth rate seen in the 2010s, which was the lowest growth rate since the 1930s.
