Washington, Moscow to Prioritize Peace Over Conflict: Kremlin

Moscow [Russia] – In a significant diplomatic shift, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that Russia and the United States will now emphasize peace and problem-solving through dialogue. The statement was made during an interview with television host Pavel Zarubin and reported by Russian state media on Sunday.

Trump-Putin Call Signals a New Direction

Peskov’s comments follow a recent phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 12. During their discussion, the leaders addressed ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, bilateral relations, and broader international concerns. Both agreed to maintain communication and plan an in-person meeting in the near future.

Ukraine’s Position on Ceasefire Talks

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with NBC News, stated that he trusts President Trump but would not accept any ceasefire agreement without Ukraine’s involvement. Zelensky also warned that if the US withdraws from NATO, there is a “100 percent” risk that Russia could expand its occupation into Europe.

Additionally, Zelensky emphasized that any proposed deal between Ukraine and the US regarding access to critical minerals must include security guarantees for Kyiv to be viable.

Upcoming US-Russia Talks in Saudi Arabia

In an effort to end the nearly three-year war in Ukraine, US and Russian officials are set to meet in Saudi Arabia next week. The talks aim to establish a diplomatic framework for resolving the conflict.

US Vice President’s Controversial Remarks

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), US Vice President J.D. Vance stated that deploying American troops to Ukraine remains an option if Moscow refuses to negotiate in good faith. He suggested that the US could leverage economic and military tools to pressure Russia into peace negotiations.

However, Vance later criticized WSJ for distorting his comments. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he clarified, “The WSJ twisted my words. President Trump is the ultimate dealmaker and will bring peace to the region by ending the war in Ukraine. American troops should never be deployed unless it serves American interests and security.”

Russia’s Response to US Remarks

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to Vance’s statements, noting that they introduced new elements into the US position that require further clarification in upcoming discussions.

As diplomatic efforts gain momentum, all eyes are on the upcoming US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia, which could play a crucial role in shaping the future of the conflict.
