US President Donald Trump will host his inaugural African leaders summit of his second term on July 9-11 in Washington, a report by Semafor has said.

Heads of state from Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, and Senegal are set to attend the high-level summit, which will center on building US economic engagement in West Africa, with a focus on the critical minerals industry, and tackling regional security issues.

The summit is taking place amidst a surge in US-Africa diplomatic engagements and follows a recent US-brokered Democratic Republic of Congo-Rwanda ceasefire accord signed last week at the White House.

While a full-fledged US-Africa summit is in the works for September in New York, the gathering next week seems to be about generating momentum and reinforcing strategic connections with significant West African countries in advance of the larger gathering.
