Donald Trump has revealed that he will rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” an issue he mainly cites as due to immigration. Ahead of his inauguration on January 20, the incoming US president declared the name change “appropriate,” emphasizing his belief that Mexico must take stronger action to curb the flow of migrants into the US.

Trump made the announcement during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate, just a day after proposing that Canada should merge with the US to become the 51st state. In his remarks, Trump expressed that renaming the Gulf would have a “beautiful ring” and would better represent the region’s significance. “That encompasses a whole lot of real estate. The Gulf of America, what a gorgeous name. And appropriate, appropriate,” he said.

The plan to rename is being floated amid Trump’s persistent immigration hardline policy, which he has maintained for years poses a significant threat to US security. “Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country. They can stop them,” Trump said. He also reiterated his plan to slap “very serious tariffs” on both Mexico and Canada, claiming drugs are pouring into the US through those countries.

Trump also made a more general attack on US territorial control, specifically regarding Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. He described the decision by former President Jimmy Carter to return control of the Panama Canal to Panama as a “disgrace,” suggesting the US was “shortchanged in the deal.”

These proposals further underscore Trump’s aggressive approach to foreign policy, immigration, and US territorial interests, all of which he plans to address once he officially takes office.
