The United States witnessed a sharp rise in homelessness this year, reaching unprecedented levels, as high housing costs and inflation strained households across the country. According to an annual assessment by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), approximately 771,480 individuals were homeless on a single night in January 2024—a staggering 18% increase compared to 2023.
This surge translates to about 23 homeless individuals per 10,000 people in the United States, the world’s largest economy. The report highlighted the median rent in January 2024 as being 20% higher than three years prior, compounding financial pressures on households.
Contributing Factors: Housing Costs, Wages, and Systemic Challenges
HUD identified multiple factors behind the alarming uptick in homelessness, including stagnating wages for middle- and lower-income families and the lingering effects of systemic racism. The report also pointed to the impact of natural disasters, increased immigration, and the termination of Covid-19-related homelessness prevention programs.
Adrianne Todman, head of HUD, emphasized the need for proactive measures:
“While this data reflects a situation nearly a year old, it’s critical we focus on evidence-based strategies to prevent and end homelessness,” she stated.
Vulnerable Groups See Largest Impact
Children under 18 experienced the most significant rise, with nearly 150,000 children homeless on a single night in 2024—a 33% increase over the previous year. Families with children also recorded the largest single-year spike in homelessness, further exacerbated by rising migration trends.
Black individuals continue to be disproportionately affected, representing 32% of the homeless population despite comprising only 12% of the overall U.S. population.
In contrast, homelessness among veterans reached its lowest recorded level, showcasing the success of targeted support programs.
As the nation grapples with this crisis, the report underscores the urgent need for comprehensive housing policies and community-driven solutions to address homelessness effectively.
