PM Modi Pays Tribute To Mahatma Gandhi In Guyana During Historic Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue in the Promenade Gardens, Georgetown, Guyana, on Thursday. This tribute marks the enduring legacy of Gandhi’s principles of peace and non-violence. The statue, erected in 1969 to celebrate Gandhi’s 100th birth anniversary, serves as a symbol of his global impact.

Floral Tribute at Arya Samaj Monument

In addition to honoring Gandhi, PM Modi also paid floral tributes at the Arya Samaj monument. This monument, unveiled in 2011, commemorates the centenary of the Arya Samaj movement in Guyana, a significant cultural milestone for the Indian community in the country.

Cultural Celebration with Indian Diaspora

PM Modi participated in a vibrant ‘Ram Bhajan’ recitation, where he played ‘manjeera’ alongside members of the Indian diaspora, reflecting the strong cultural bond between India and Guyana.

Visit to the Indian Arrival Monument

The Prime Minister also visited the Indian Arrival Monument in Monument Gardens, where he paid floral tribute to the Indian diaspora’s struggle and contributions to Guyana’s cultural landscape. The monument, gifted by India in 1991, is a replica of the first ship that brought indentured Indian migrants to Guyana in 1838.

Strengthening India-Guyana Relations

In a special session of the Guyanese Parliament, PM Modi reiterated the deep relationship between India and Guyana, emphasizing values of democracy and humanity in global affairs. He stressed that the world must focus on universal cooperation, especially in areas like space and sea, instead of conflict.

Historic First Visit

PM Modi’s visit is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in over 50 years, marking a significant moment in the diplomatic ties between the two nations. As part of his visit, he also attended the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit with Caribbean leaders.
