Panama City – Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino has dismissed Donald Trump’s allegation that Chinese troops are operating the Panama Canal as “nonsense” and affirmed the canal’s sovereignty under Panamanian control.
The controversy began when Trump, on his social media platform Truth Social, accused the Panamanian government of allowing Chinese soldiers to control the canal. He also criticized the alleged “exorbitant” fees imposed on US ships.
Mulino Sets the Record Straight
Speaking to reporters, Mulino stated, “There is not a single Chinese soldier in the canal. For the love of God, you are free, the whole world is free, to visit the canal if you please.” He categorically denied any foreign interference, emphasizing that the Panama Canal is owned and operated solely by Panamanians.
“The sovereignty and independence of our country are not negotiable,” Mulino added, rejecting Trump’s threats to seize control of the canal.
Panama’s Relationship with China
In 2017, Panama established diplomatic ties with China after ending relations with Taiwan. Mulino described the relationship as mutually beneficial and based on respect. He clarified that no aspect of the canal’s operations involves Chinese military presence.
Trump’s Criticism and Appointment Announcement
Trump’s comments were made during a conservative Turning Point USA conference in Phoenix, where he also criticized Canada and Mexico for their trade practices. He announced his intention to appoint Kevin Marino Cabrera as the US ambassador to Panama, describing him as someone who would “do a fantastic job representing our Nation’s interests.”
Panama Stands Firm
Mulino reiterated Panama’s sovereignty over the canal, a vital trade route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He also ruled out any possibility of lowering rates for US ships or initiating discussions on canal ownership.
