Macron and Trump Discuss Ukraine Peace Deal, Stress Security Guarantees

French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Donald Trump said on Monday that any peace deal in Ukraine must include security guarantees. Moreover, they warned that peace should not mean Ukraine’s “surrender.”

Macron Sees a Way Forward

After his talks with Trump, Macron expressed optimism about a solution. Despite concerns of a transatlantic divide, he emphasized that discussions had shown a clear path ahead. Notably, their meeting took place at the White House on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

Meanwhile, both leaders acknowledged progress on sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. However, Macron stressed the importance of US security guarantees for Kyiv. “This peace cannot mean the surrender of Ukraine,” he stated during their joint press conference.

Zelensky Pushes for Peace, Trump’s Stance Raises Concerns

At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged European leaders in Kyiv to achieve peace “this year.” However, concerns grew as Trump shifted his position. Surprisingly, he referred to Zelensky as a “dictator without elections.”

In response, Macron announced plans to collaborate with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on deploying peacekeeping troops if a deal is reached. Furthermore, Starmer will visit Washington and meet Trump at the White House on Thursday.

“After speaking with President Trump, I fully believe there is a path forward,” Macron said.

US Held Secret Talks with Russia

Shortly before Macron’s trip to Washington, US officials met Russian diplomats in Riyadh to discuss Ukraine. Notably, Ukraine and Europe were excluded from these talks.

As a result, Trump’s sudden declaration that he was ready to restart diplomacy with Russia sent shockwaves worldwide. Additionally, he claimed he could end the war soon.

Trump further announced that Zelensky would visit the White House in two weeks. During the visit, both sides will sign a deal granting the US access to Ukraine’s rare minerals.

War’s Devastation and Trump’s Bold Claim

Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has faced its deadliest conflict since World War II. Consequently, tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians have lost their lives.

Amid the ongoing crisis, Trump made a controversial statement. He accused Ukraine of starting the war. Notably, this marked a major shift from US policy under Joe Biden, who had strongly supported Kyiv.

US-Russia Agreement Sparks Debate

Despite growing tensions, the US hailed a “landmark agreement” with Russia. Interestingly, the UN Security Council adopted a US-backed resolution that did not criticize Russia’s invasion.

As a result, many questioned America’s changing stance on Ukraine.
