Harris Becomes Democratic Front Runner
In a recent Morning Consult poll, it is revealed that former Vice President Kamala Harris is the most desired candidate among Democratic supporters for the 2028 presidential election. The poll reveals that 36% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents support Harris as their first choice.
Said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was the lone other candidate with double-digit backing, winning 10%. Still, 13% of the respondents were undecided. Other hopefuls such as Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and California Governor Gavin Newsom each drew 5% of the support. Billionaire Mark Cuban and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro lagged at 4% each.
Sparsely Available Public Footprint Since 2024 Defeat
Although she led early polls, Harris has been mostly absent from the public eye since her 2024 loss to President Donald Trump. She did not win the popular vote or any of the swing states, and her political future has been called into question.
Her minimal public appearances, like a recent night out to a Broadway show, have allowed space for other Democratic leaders to gain the limelight. Governor Walz, for example, has campaigned energetically in the battleground states of Wisconsin, emerging as an influential Democratic figure for future elections.
In view of California Governor Run?
Speculation of what Harris might do next picked up pace after she alluded to running for governor in California. Still, she indicated that she would finalize her choice over the summer.
Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has pushed her to act quickly, saying, “The challenges are too big. We deserve a real conversation.” He urged that it could damage her credibility in the election if she delayed too long.
As Harris sits atop early Democratic polls while being undecided on what the future holds for her, 2028 politics remain very fluid.
