US Vice President-elect JD Vance was hospitalized for a minor sinus surgery on Friday, following his attendance at the Senate’s swearing-in ceremony. The surgery took place at George Washington Hospital in Washington, according to Fox News.
In a statement to The Hill, Vance’s spokesperson William Martin said: “The Vice President-elect is having long-planned, minor sinus surgery.” He confirmed that he will be back to work a day after the surgery.
Vance to become youngest US VP?
This medical procedure comes just weeks before Vance’s inauguration as vice president, which is scheduled for January 20, alongside President-elect Donald Trump.
At 40, Vance will become the youngest US vice president since Richard Nixon, who was the same age when he assumed office in 1953.
Before being hospitalized, Vance attended the Senate and met with new Republican senators Bernie Moreno of Ohio and Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania as they were sworn into office. Expressing his support for them on social media, Vance congratulated both senators: “I was proud to stand with [Sen. Bernie Moreno] and [Dave McCormick] as they were sworn into the US Senate.”
Vance currently serves as a senator from Ohio, and he has yet to announce his resignation date. After he resigns, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine will appoint a temporary replacement to serve until a special election in November determines who will fill the rest of Vance’s term, which runs until 2028.
Vance’s surgery to impact his inauguration?
Vance’s recent surgery is not expected to affect his upcoming vice presidency. His quick return to work indicates a smooth recovery, ensuring he remains on track for the forthcoming inauguration.
Vance was all smiles as he stood near US Vice President Kamala Harris while she administered the oath to Moreno and the other senators, despite her mispronunciation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Although Harris and Vance did not engage with each other, both exchanged smiles and greetings with the newly sworn-in senators.
