A Life in Film
Baena’s directorial ventures gained widespread recognition for their unique blend of humor and darkness. His 2014 zombie-themed romantic comedy Life After Beth, starring Plaza, and the 2017 medieval dark comedy The Little Hours were celebrated for their originality. The latter, inspired by Giovanni Boccaccio’s The Decameron, reflected Baena’s academic interest in medieval and renaissance eras.
Baena also co-wrote the 2004 existential comedy I Heart Huckabees with director David O. Russell. The film, which humorously explored themes of existentialism, featured an all-star cast including Dustin Hoffman, Naomi Watts, Jason Schwartzman, and Mark Wahlberg.
Personal Life and Legacy
Baena and Plaza began dating in 2011, with Plaza revealing in 2021 that the couple had quietly married. His work often featured Plaza in prominent roles, showcasing their creative synergy.
Baena is survived by his wife, Aubrey Plaza, his mother Barbara Stern, stepfather Roger Stern, father Scott Baena, stepmother Michele Baena, brother Brad Baena, and step-siblings Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman.
