Honouring Jimmy Carter: Federal Holiday on January 9

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia. To honor the nation’s longest-lived president, President Joe Biden proclaimed January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning. This day will also be observed as a federal holiday for pay and leave purposes.

Schools, universities, and government offices will remain closed. Federal employees scheduled to be off will not be charged leave, while those required to work will receive holiday premium pay where applicable. Federal agencies will suspend operations, except for employees engaged in essential services like national security, defense, or critical operations.

President Biden also directed all American flags to be flown at half-staff for 30 days, including at U.S. embassies, consulates, and military facilities overseas, as a tribute to President Carter’s immense contributions to the nation.

Financial Markets to Remain Closed

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq, and other financial markets will shut down on January 9. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association confirmed that the bond market will close early at 2 p.m. EST.

This tradition of halting financial and government operations during presidential mourning dates back to the death of President George H.W. Bush in December 2018.
