Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers have unanimously supported a US-led call for a ceasefire in Ukraine, host Canada confirmed on Friday. The decision, despite tensions caused by Donald Trump’s recent outreach to Russia, reflects the bloc’s firm stance on the ongoing war.
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly emphasized the importance of this consensus. “Through our discussions, we achieved strong G7 unity on many issues, especially Ukraine,” she told reporters in Quebec.
Russia’s Response Awaited
Joly confirmed that all G7 foreign ministers agree on the US proposal for a ceasefire, backed by Ukraine. “We are now analyzing Russia’s reaction. The ball is in their court,” she added.
This development marks a significant diplomatic shift. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia earlier this week, where Kyiv signaled support for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire.
Concerns Over Trump’s Russia Outreach
The G7—comprising Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States—has been unsettled by Trump’s renewed engagement with Moscow since returning to office. His pressure on Ukraine has further fueled concerns within the bloc.
However, the latest discussions signal a collective push to de-escalate the crisis. As world leaders wait for Russia’s response, the unity among G7 nations remains a crucial factor in determining the next course of action.
