Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the FBI, faced a grilling session during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday where he emphasized the need to “restore public trust” in the agency and control violent crime. Patel, an ardent loyalist of Donald Trump and a former federal prosecutor, promised “due process and transparency” would be his “top priority if confirmed”.

At the hearing, Patel prepared for tough questioning from Senate Democrats, much of which is likely to be focused on his past criticism of the FBI. He has in the past publicly expressed misgivings over the bureau’s investigations into Trump, including its handling of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Critics are sounding the alarm that his past loyalty to the former president could undermine his ability to run the FBI as a neutral head.

Senator Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the committee, expressed concerns about Patel’s ability to manage the FBI, given his political ties. Durbin stressed the importance of a director who fully understands the gravity of protecting the nation from terrorism and violent crime, rather than one distracted by personal grievances.

Pat, a former staff member of the House Intelligence Committee, countered arguments that his political past made him ineligible. “I am actually the best for the job” in revitalizing the FBI as he called for an overhaul of an agency that he believes lost the public’s trust. Nominations under him continue to be a cause of heated controversy, especially considering the agency aims to regain its credibility after ex-FBI director Christopher Wray resigned last month.
