Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke on the telephone on Saturday regarding cooperation efforts with the newly established Syrian government to facilitate a transition, according to Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the discussion, Fidan reaffirmed Ankara’s stance on not allowing the Kurdish YPG militia to enter Syria and reiterated that Turkey has never changed its stance about that. A ministry spokesman reinforced this commitment toward regional security and confronting threats related to the group.
It mentioned the State Department’s assertion of Blinken’s focus on a Syrian-led and owned political process. He reiterated the need for human rights, an inclusive, and representative government as priorities of the transition.
The discussions also covered measures to prevent terrorism from threatening the security of both Turkey and Syria. Both leaders underscored the importance of addressing shared concerns to achieve stability in the region.
The dialogue reflects continued diplomatic efforts between Turkey and the US in trying to navigate complex dynamics in Syria while prioritizing peace and security.
