Thirteen-year-old figure skater Jinna Han died in a midair collision between American Airlines Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter. All 64 passengers and crew members on board, including Jinna and her mother, Jin Han, were killed in the crash, which occurred on Thursday. The plane had returned from a development camp and carried several members of the Skating Club of Boston, where Jinna had been a dedicated member since 2020.

Jinna was described as a highly skilled, elegant, and sportive skater at The Skating Club of Boston. She was loved both on and off the ice by all, including the CEO of the club, Doug Zeghibe, who remembered her as a fine competitor who was very kind and supportive to others. Among the six Skating Club of Boston members aboard the flight were Jinna’s mother, fellow skater Spencer Lane, and world champion coaches Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov.

A resurfaced video from Jinna’s 2025 Eastern Sectionals performance shows the sort of skill that allowed her to land six triple jumps, good enough for a fourth-place finish. For this effort, she was selected as a member of the National High-Performance Development Team.

Olympian Mirai Nagasu said she was “especially personal” in her sorrow over Jinna’s loss, while Jimmy Ma extolled her exceptional skill at such a young age. U.S. Figure Skating verified that several members of their community were on the flight and were returning from the camp, one being former Soviet pair skater Inna Volyanskaya.
