India Evacuates 75 Citizens from Syria Amid Conflict

75 Indian citizens were evacuated from Syria on Tuesday in response to the escalating conflict and growing power crisis. Notably, this move came just two days after rebel forces overthrew President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Coordinated Effort

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that the Indian embassies in Damascus and Beirut collaborated to carry out the evacuation. Consequently, the MEA stated, “The Government of India today evacuated 75 Indian nationals from Syria, following recent developments in that country.”

Safe Passage to Lebanon

Furthermore, all the evacuees safely crossed into Lebanon. They are now scheduled to return to India via available commercial flights. “All Indian nationals have safely crossed over to Lebanon and will return by available commercial flights to India,” the MEA added.

Details of the Evacuees

Among the evacuees were 44 ‘zaireen’ from Jammu and Kashmir, who had been stranded at Saida Zainab. The MEA reiterated its commitment to protecting its citizens abroad. Therefore, it advised, “Indian nationals remaining in Syria are advised to stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Damascus.”

Fall of Syrian Government

Meanwhile, on Sunday, rebel forces took control of Damascus and several other major cities, leading to the collapse of the Syrian government. As a result, President Bashar al-Assad fled the country, reportedly seeking asylum in Russia. This marked the end of his family’s 50-year rule.

Assad’s Brutal Rule

Assad’s nearly 14-year rule was characterized by civil war, widespread violence, and harsh crackdowns on political opposition.

India Monitors Situation

In response, the MEA assured that it is closely monitoring the situation in Syria. Additionally, the government advocated for a peaceful and inclusive political process led by the Syrian people. “The government will continue to closely monitor the situation,” the MEA confirmed.

Through swift action, India ensured the safety of its citizens while calling for peace and stability in Syria.
