In an exclusive interview with The Daily Guardian, Neha Gupta, Co-Founder and Design Director of Beyond Designs, discusses her philosophy of meaningful maximalism, the evolution of her hospitality ventures, and the vision behind creating immersive spaces that seamlessly blend design, culture, craftsmanship, and storytelling.

Q. Beyond Designs is known for its signature style of “meaningful maximalism.” How would you define this philosophy?
A. Meaningful maximalism is about creating richness with intention. Every material, artwork, texture, and detail contributes to a larger story rather than serving as decoration alone. Our spaces are layered, personal, and timeless, reflecting the people who inhabit them. In a world of generic aesthetics, this approach celebrates individuality and craftsmanship while balancing beauty and functionality.

Q. What inspired your transition from designer to restaurateur?
A. Hospitality evolved naturally from our passion for creating memorable experiences. Beginning with Beyond Designs Bistro and later ventures such as Nineteen78, Kala Swasti, Kala Cafe, Forest Table, and Canteen Stories, we combined architecture, interiors, food, and culture to create immersive destinations where design and dining converge, engaging all the senses.

Q. How do you create spaces that evoke an emotional connection?
A. For us, design is about how a space makes people feel. Every project begins by understanding the client’s lifestyle, aspirations, and story. Thoughtfully chosen materials, lighting, furniture, art, and handcrafted details create spaces with warmth and authenticity. Whether residential or hospitality, our goal is to design environments that inspire, comfort, and become part of people’s lasting memories.

Q. From -” SHOULD BE FROM BEYOND DESIGNS BISTRO” (THAT’S THE FIRST HOSPITALITY BRAND) Nineteen78 to Forest Table, each of your restaurant ventures has a distinct identity. Which project is closest to your heart and why?

A. It would be difficult to single out a project, as every hospitality venture holds a unique personal significance for us. Beyond Designs Bistro marked our entry into hospitality and demonstrated how design and dining could come together to create meaningful experiences. Nineteen78 celebrates nostalgia and timeless charm, while Kala Swasti and Kala Cafe draw inspiration from art, culture, and craftsmanship. Forest Table enabled us to explore the relationship among nature, heritage, and contemporary hospitality in a remarkable setting. Each restaurant has its own personality, audience, and story, making the design process unique and rewarding. What connects all these ventures is our passion for creating immersive environments where architecture, interiors, food, and culture come together seamlessly. Rather than viewing them as individual projects, we see them as extensions of the same philosophy, creating spaces that foster connection, evoke emotion, and leave a lasting impression. For that reason, every restaurant holds a special place in our hearts, and each continues to contribute to our understanding of hospitality design in its own way.

Q. What was the vision behind Forest Table at Teen Murti Bhavan?
A. Forest Table was envisioned as a respectful dialogue between heritage, nature, and contemporary hospitality. We carefully preserved the site’s mature trees and worked with the existing landscape, allowing the design to complement the surroundings. The result is a timeless dining destination where guests experience exceptional food while reconnecting with the history and tranquillity of Teen Murti Bhavan.

Q. How do you balance global design influences with Indian craftsmanship?
A. While inspired by global design, our work is rooted in Indian craftsmanship and culture. We collaborate with skilled artisans to incorporate handcrafted furniture, bespoke finishes, and traditional techniques into contemporary spaces. Rather than following trends, we reinterpret international influences through an Indian lens, creating timeless environments that celebrate heritage and innovation.

Q. How has integrating design, manufacturing, and execution contributed to your success?
A. Our integrated approach gives us complete creative control from concept to execution. In-house manufacturing allows us to deliver bespoke furniture, custom finishes, and intricate details exactly as envisioned while ensuring quality and consistency. It also encourages collaboration, innovation, and highly personalised solutions, enabling us to create distinctive spaces and provide a seamless client experience.

Q. What trends are shaping luxury residential and hospitality design in India?
A. Luxury today is shifting towards authenticity, personalisation, and meaningful experiences. Clients increasingly value craftsmanship, bespoke design and narrative-driven spaces. Wellness, sustainability, and stronger connections with nature are also becoming essential. The future of luxury lies in timeless environments that combine cultural relevance, individuality, and exceptional craftsmanship.

Q.The greatest challenge has been balancing creativity, business leadership, and family responsibilities A. A. while staying true to Beyond Designs’ vision. The journey has taught me adaptability and the importance of collaboration. Success is never achieved alone—it is built through talented teams, trusted partnerships, and a shared commitment to excellence, values that continue to shape our growth.

Q. What is your vision for Beyond Designs?
A. Our vision is to continue creating spaces that combine craftsmanship, storytelling, and meaningful maximalism. Alongside bespoke residences, we aim to expand our hospitality portfolio with immersive concepts that bring together design, food, art, and culture. Our focus is not simply growth but creating timeless experiences that inspire, connect, and leave a lasting impact.
