Assam CM Announces Rs 220 Crore Water Project for Jorhat

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently launched several initiatives to boost growth in Jorhat district. These initiatives aim to address long-standing issues and promote development.

Water Supply Project

First, CM Sarma laid the foundation stone for the Jorhat town water supply scheme. The goal is to provide safe drinking water to the people of Jorhat. The project, known as the Drink from Tap (DFT) project, will cost Rs. 220 crore. It will ensure a clean, uninterrupted 24/7 water supply using advanced technology and modern infrastructure.

Expanding Development Initiatives

CM Sarma introduced several programs across different sectors. These include Education, Industries & Commerce, Revenue and Disaster Management, and Finance. The initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to overall development and improving the lives of its citizens.

The launch was part of the state’s “12 Days of Development” program, which began on December 11. This program aims to speed up development across Assam.

Microfinance Relief Scheme

In addition, the CM launched the ceremonial distribution of No Dues Certificates under the Assam Microfinance Incentive and Relief Scheme. This scheme will benefit Category-III, Phase II borrowers, with a total of Rs. 223.30 crore being distributed. CM Sarma also announced that Rs 35.337 crore would be disbursed to 6,86,487 families.

Furthermore, he presented seed capital to 6,490 members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the Pradhan Mantri Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme. The total amount disbursed was Rs. 21.90 crore.

Education Schemes for Students

As part of the 12 Days of Development program, the CM introduced three major education initiatives. One of these is the Anundoram Borooah Award. This award will give cash prizes of approximately Rs. 12,500 to students scoring 75% or more in the HSLC exams. The money will be transferred directly to students via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Additionally, more than 3 lakh students in Class 9 will receive bicycles under the Chief Minister’s Special Scheme.

Support for Women

CM Sarma also discussed the government’s microfinance relief scheme for women. The No-Due Certificates will allow women to access loans from banks. The CM announced plans to provide additional financial support in 2026, amounting to Rs 15,000. He added that efforts will continue to help women secure larger loans.

Lastly, the “Lakhpati Baideo” scheme is under verification. Once approved by local MLAs, it will offer Rs 10,000 to women in Self-Help Groups (SHGs) through banks.

These initiatives aim to improve water supply, education, microfinance, and women’s empowerment in Jorhat district. They are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to accelerate development across Assam.
