The British general elections are around the corner. The polls, which will witness Conservative leader and incumbent PM Rishi Sunak, competing against Labour leader Keir Starmer, are scheduled to be held on July 4. Amidst all the election excitement, many voters are seeking ways to vote from outside the British territory.

Who can register to vote?

British citizens living overseas, as well as eligible Irish citizens registered in Northern Ireland, can register as overseas voters. For the upcoming polls, the registration deadline is 11:59 pm on June 18, 2024. Voters in England, Scotland, or Wales can register online, while those in Northern Ireland must use a paper form.

How to Register for Voting

British citizens residing outside the British territory, as well as eligible Irish citizens registered in Northern Ireland, are eligible to register as voters. The registration deadline is 11:59 pm (local time) on June 18. Residents in England, Scotland, or Wales can register online, whereas those in Northern Ireland must use a paper form.

Renewal and Duration

Once registration is completed, your status as an overseas voter lasts for three years. You will receive a renewal reminder. Failure to renew your voter registration will result in removal from the register, and individuals will need to submit a fresh application.

Special Cases: Northern Ireland and Armed Forces

In Northern Ireland, overseas voters can vote by proxy and must use a paper form to apply. Under ‘service’ voter registration, members of the armed forces serving abroad have provisions that cater to their needs, requiring renewal every five years. Similar services are available to Crown servants and British Council employees stationed outside the UK.
