Precautionary Measures as Landfall Approaches

The cyclonic storm is anticipated to make landfall on Friday morning, prompting authorities in Odisha and West Bengal to ramp up precautionary measures. Residents from coastal regions are being evacuated, and educational institutions are closing. Cyclone Dana is expected to hit between Puri and Sagar Island early on October 25, with wind speeds reaching 100-110 mph and gusts possibly hitting 120 mph.

Major Disruptions in Transportation

In response to Cyclone Dana, Indian Railways has canceled over 300 trains. “Railways have taken numerous steps in preparation for Cyclone Dana. The Railway Minister has reviewed our preparations and directed us to minimize traffic disruptions so we can manage the situation effectively,” stated General Manager of East Coast Railway, Parmeshwar Funkwal, to PTI.

Flight Operations Halted at Kolkata Airport

Kolkata airport authorities have announced a suspension of flight operations for 15 hours starting at 6 pm on Thursday due to the anticipated effects of Cyclone Dana. An official explained that this decision prioritizes the safety of passengers, airline personnel, equipment, navigational aids, and infrastructure. “In view of Cyclone Dana’s impact on West Bengal’s coastal region, including Kolkata, flight operations will be suspended from 6 pm on 24 October to 9 am on 25 October due to predicted heavy winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall,” an Airports Authority of India (AAI) spokesperson said.
