In an exclusive interview with NewsX, Khanal said the Rastriya Swatantra Party, which he represents, was less than four years old and did not carry the burden of past ideological positions.
“We want to look at India not from the lens of friction in geopolitics, but from the lens of opportunity,” he said, adding that Nepal’s priority was to create opportunities for its youth and accelerate economic growth.
On the longstanding boundary dispute, Khanal said Nepal and India were committed to resolving outstanding issues through bilateral mechanisms and dialogue. His remarks came amid concerns over the Kalapani and Lipulekh areas and Nepal’s objection to an India-China agreement involving the contested region.
Khanal also thanked the Indian government for ensuring fuel supplies to Nepal despite global uncertainties and for working to provide fertilisers ahead of the planting season. He said both countries had robust mechanisms to cooperate on issues of bilateral and global importance.
The minister also highlighted the potential for greater sporting cooperation between the two neighbours. Expressing pride in Nepal’s recent cricketing performances, he said Kathmandu hoped to host the India A team soon.
Referring to the dramatic rescue of Nepali mountain guide Dawa Sherpa, who was found alive after going missing on Mount Everest, Khanal said mountaineering involved significant risks and assured that the government was prepared to extend all necessary support.
