Despite concerns about the pitch quality at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York for the T20 World Cup, the ICC has clarified that there are no plans to relocate the remaining matches. The pitches, particularly criticized for their uneven bounce and favouritism towards bowlers, have sparked debate after low-scoring matches involving Sri Lanka and India.

India, in particular, has expressed dissatisfaction with the unpredictable nature of the pitches, especially with concerns about player safety. However, ICC officials have stated that there are no alternative plans to move matches to venues in Florida or Texas, both of which have natural turf strips.

While an unused pitch has been earmarked for the highly anticipated India-Pakistan match, adjustments may be made based on the performance of other pitches leading up to the encounter. The pop-up venue in New York features 10 Tahoma grass pitches imported from Australia and installed in a drop-in arrangement before the tournament.

Damien Hough, an Australian curator experienced in drop-in pitches, was enlisted by the ICC to oversee pitch preparation in New York. The outfield comprises Kentucky bluegrass grown in New Jersey on sand, contributing to uneven bounce observed during matches.

Player safety has become a concern due to unpredictable pitch behavior, with several players sustaining injuries. Additionally, slow outfield conditions and discrepancies in boundary lengths have further compounded issues at the venue.

Despite ongoing concerns, a definitive explanation for the pitch problems has not been identified. Reports indicate apprehension among players, with South Africa’s batters opting for throw-downs over facing their own bowlers and local net bowlers due to injury worries.
