T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan Eliminated in the First Round; Out of Super 8 Race

Pakistan’s journey in the T20 World Cup 2024 came to an abrupt end due to inclement weather in Lauderhill, resulting in a split of points between Ireland and the USA. With this outcome, the USA secured their place in the Super Eight stage alongside India, also securing their spot in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

For Pakistan, this tournament was marked by a series of challenges, beginning with their arrival in the USA without any warm-up matches and facing numerous practice session cancellations due to rain. Their lack of familiarity with the conditions proved costly in their opening fixture against the USA, where they suffered a defeat in the Super Over. Subsequently, Pakistan faced another setback when they faltered in their chase against India, losing by six runs while pursuing a target of 120.

With only one victory so far, a seven-wicket win over Canada, Pakistan’s hopes relied on other match outcomes, particularly the USA vs. Ireland encounter. Unfortunately for Pakistan, a washout in this game sealed their fate, as any result other than an Irish victory ensured the USA’s advancement, leaving Pakistan out of contention.

Despite their early exit, Pakistan’s current T20I ranking of seventh guarantees them a direct entry into the 2026 T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. This premature elimination marks the earliest exit for Pakistan in a T20 World Cup, having played only three matches before bowing out. While they faced group-stage eliminations in 2014 and 2016, Pakistan boasts a strong T20 World Cup record overall, having reached at least the semi-finals in every other edition. Their three appearances in the final, alongside a title win in 2009, underscore Pakistan’s historical significance in T20 cricket.
