The Supreme Court designated 56 advocates as senior advocates and eleven out of them are women.
The Supreme Court is conferring senior designations after 5 years.
The court stated that in March 2019, 37 advocates, including 6 women, were conferred with senior designations. Thus, this being the first time that senior designations have been decided based on the modified guidelines framed as per the judgment passed by the Supreme Court last year in the Indira Jaising case.
The Supreme Court stated that 282 advocates had applied for senior designation out of which 200 lawyers were shortlisted for the interview.
The committee headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud interviewed the advocates.
