A wave of nostalgia and speculation washed over the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday as MS Dhoni’s parents, Pan Singh Dhoni and Devaki Devi, watched their first-ever IPL match at the stadium. Ever since Dhoni’s legendary association with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) started in 2008, this was their first time appearing in the stands—a moment that did not escape attention.
Adding to the emotional setting, Dhoni’s wife Sakshi and daughter Ziva were also present. While the duo often attends IPL games at Chepauk, the appearance of Dhoni’s parents sparked strong retirement rumours. Many believed the 43-year-old might be playing his final match at the venue, especially with whispers of him possibly leading the side in place of Ruturaj Gaikwad.
The grapevine went into high gear earlier in the day following reports that Ruturaj was uncertain following a blow on his exposed elbow while playing CSK against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. All speculation, however, came to an end when Gaikwad stepped out for the toss.
“My elbow is good, eager to go,” Gaikwad replied, affirming his fitness and dashing hopes of a Dhoni-led retro night. Dhoni remained in his customary role behind the wickets and did not assume captaincy responsibilities.
Retirement Rumors Intensify, But CSK Remains Committed
With Dhoni playing at No. 9 in the last match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, his place in the team was questioned by most fans. The decision was criticized and also sparked talk of his possible retirement at the conclusion of IPL 2025. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming, though, explained Dhoni’s thought process behind his batting position.
“It’s a time thing – MS judges it. His knees aren’t what they used to be. He’s moving OK, but there’s still an attrition aspect to it. He can’t bat 10 overs running full stick, so he will gauge on the day what he can give us. If the game’s in the balance, he will go a little bit earlier, and he backs other players when other opportunities are up. It’s about balancing that,” said Fleming.
As far as the standings go, Delhi Capitals are placed second on the points table with two wins out of two games. CSK, on the other hand, are eighth with a single win out of three games, their only victory being against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians.
