Shapoor Zadran Retires: Afghanistan’s Cricketing Legend Steps Down After Over Two Decades

Shapoor Zadran, 37, one of Afghanistan’s senior fast bowlers, said goodbye to the game of cricket from the international tours, bringing the curtains down after a cricketing life that has been in the venture for more than 22 years. The bowler was one of the mainstay persons who shaped the Afghan national cricket team to take gradually its space on the cricket maps of the globe.

Shapoor Zadran announced his retirement and marked the end of a glorious career after three ICC Men’s T20 World Cups for Afghanistan. Among some of the memorable moments, he scored the match-winning runs against Scotland in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup way back in 2015, which marked Afghanistan’s first win since being admitted into the prestigious cricketing event.

Zadran had performed equally both as a bowler and a batsman to uplift the status of Afghanistan on the international cricketing scene.

Tearful Goodbye from the Veteran Bowler

In a tearful Facebook post, Zadran said it was not an easy decision for him. “Today is that day which a player always hopes never comes in his lifetime but it sure has an arrival. On the ground for 22 long years and committed to love with cricket as such, it would be a formal communication of withdrawal of my participation at the International Arena. For that, cricket hasn’t remained more than just another game-it remained my passion and identity too with the purpose behind life,” he informed.

Reflecting on his journey, Zadran further added, “Since childhood, I dreamt of representing Afghanistan, and looking back now, I am proud to have played a part in raising our nation’s flag on the international stage.”

Career to Remember of Shapoor Zadran

Zadran played a total of 80 international matches for Afghanistan. He took 43 wickets in One Day Internationals and 37 wickets in Twenty20 International matches. His last international match was against Ireland in 2020.

As Zadran retires, an era of Afghanistan cricket ends as he takes away the legacy of commitment, passion, and remarkable on-field achievements.
