Pakistan batter Saim Ayub underwent assessments with orthopedic specialists in London on Saturday to evaluate the severity of his ankle injury. While a clear timeline for his recovery remains uncertain, it may take another week to determine his availability for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy next month.

Renowned orthopedic surgeons Dr. David Redfern and Dr. Lucky Jeyaseelan examined Saim’s condition. According to a source close to the player, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is highly optimistic about his recovery, particularly for the high-stakes Champions Trophy match against India scheduled for February 23 in Dubai.

“Even if the doctors conclude he won’t recover in time for Pakistan’s opening game against New Zealand on February 19 in Karachi, but could be fit for the India match, the selectors and PCB are willing to take the risk,” the source revealed.

Saim had been initially advised six weeks of rest for his injury, but the PCB sent him to London for consultations with top specialists, emphasizing their commitment to getting him fit for the marquee event and especially for the India clash.

The specialists have ruled out both invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, stating that Saim’s injury can be treated with physiotherapy, medication, and rest. However, the exact duration of his rehabilitation period will be decided based on reports expected next week.

“For now, the findings suggest that Saim can recover through non-surgical means, but we’ll know more about the rehab timeline soon,” the source added.

The PCB plans to include Saim in their preliminary Champions Trophy squad, as changes can be made until February 12 before finalizing the 15-member team. Saim will remain in London for the next week to determine whether his rehabilitation should continue in Lahore at the PCB’s high-performance center or in London for better care.
