Pat Cummins led Australia to a historic 3-1 triumph over India in the five-match series, reclaiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a decade-long wait. Australia’s previous BGT win occurred in the 2014/15 season, and since that time, they had endured two losses in home series and two in away series.
Assuming the role of Test captain in 2021, Cummins guided Australia to an impressive series victory in 2024/25. His leadership during the Sydney Test allowed him to make history as the first captain in history to reach a significant milestone. Cummins became the sole captain in history to achieve 20 victories in the World Test Championship (WTC).
During his captaincy, Australia has achieved 20 wins out of 33 Test matches. Ben Stokes is next with 17 victories from 29 matches, while Virat Kohli, who resigned from the captaincy in January 2022, boasts 14 wins from 22 matches.
Captains – Wins:
– Pat Cummins: 20
– Ben Stokes: 17
– Virat Kohli: 14
– Rohit Sharma: 12
– Joe Root: 12
Cummins also stands as one of the two captains to guide his team to a World Test Championship title, with Australia overcoming India in the 2023 WTC final to secure the trophy for the first time. Australia is already set to compete in the 2025 WTC final, where they will go up against South Africa from June 11 to 15 at Lord’s Cricket Ground, marking South Africa’s debut in the WTC final.
Australia’s path to the BGT victory was fraught with difficulties. They encountered a challenging beginning, losing the first Test in Perth by 295 runs. Nonetheless, they rebounded powerfully, winning the second Test by 10 wickets and controlling the third match in Brisbane, although rain thwarted a victory. Australia seized control of the Boxing Day Test, dismissing seven Indian batters in the last session to gain a 2-1 lead, before achieving a convincing win in Sydney to finish the series 3-1 and reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
