IPL 2025: BCCI Implements Three Major Rule Changes for the 18th Season

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaching its 18th season, drastic rule amendments have been made to improve the game. With 10 teams ready to fight it out for the most sought-after trophy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made crucial changes that will affect the competition. Most of them have already been announced, while some such as half-season replacement of players are still being rumored.

Ahead of the season opener between reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Kolkata, here’s a glance at three significant rule changes implemented this year.

Saliva Ban Revoked

For the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic, the bowlers will again be allowed to use saliva to polish the ball. The ban was lifted by the BCCI after a majority of the IPL captains in a historic decision taken at the captains’ conference in Mumbai. While the International Cricket Council (ICC) banned the use of saliva in 2022 for good, the IPL has its own set of rules and this amendment may be a precursor to international cricket.

Conditional Second New Ball in 2nd Innings

There will be an introduction of a new ball in the second innings of evening matches from the 11th over if the on-field umpires decide that dew is having a serious impact on the game. This step is taken to counter the issue of high-scoring matches based on too much dew. The rule, though, would not be introduced for afternoon matches.

DRS for Wides Introduced

For the first time, the Decision Review System (DRS) will be expanded to cover height wides and off-side wides to make decision-making fairer. Leg-side wides, however, will still be decided by the on-field umpires.

Impact Player Rule Retained

Even though it faced criticism during the previous season, the BCCI has chosen to keep the Impact Player rule in place. The rule enables teams to field 12 players rather than the conventional 11, giving them tactical freedom. Critics say that it stifles the growth of all-rounders, but the board is adamant about keeping the rule for this season.

With these adjustments, the new IPL season will bring new challenges and thrill for players and spectators alike.
