Mohun Bagan Super Giant dominated Punjab FC with a convincing 3-0 win at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata. As a result, they became the first team to qualify for the Indian Super League 2024-25 playoffs. The Mariners now have 46 points from 20 matches, with 14 wins and four draws.

Maclaren and Colaco Lead the Charge

In the second half, Jamie Maclaren scored twice, while Liston Colaco added another goal. Consequently, the Mariners secured their ninth consecutive home win and their 12th clean sheet of the season, further solidifying their strong defensive record.

Right from the start, Mohun Bagan Super Giant showed attacking intent. Greg Stewart created several dangerous chances and nearly scored in the 10th minute, but Punjab FC’s goalkeeper Ravi Kumar made an important save.

However, despite their early pressure, the Mariners struggled to break through Punjab FC’s disciplined defense. Although Maclaren and Colaco made several forward runs, the visitors’ backline remained solid and blocked every attempt.

Just before halftime, Mohun Bagan had a golden opportunity to take the lead on a counterattack. The ball deflected into Colaco’s path, and he attempted a long-range shot. Unfortunately, his effort lacked power, allowing Ravi Kumar to make an easy save. Moments later, Punjab FC’s Ivan Novoselec received a yellow card for a foul on Colaco, bringing the first half to a goalless close.

Tactical Changes and Punjab’s Missed Opportunity

At the start of the second half, coach Jose Molina made a key defensive change. He replaced Asish Rai with Ashique Kuruniyan, which led to a reshuffle in the backline. Subhasish Bose moved to center-back, Ashique took over as left-back, and Dippendu Biswas switched to right-back.

Meanwhile, Punjab FC came close to scoring in the 55th minute. Abhishek Meetei set up Ezequiel Vidal on the left, who then delivered a precise pass to Petros Giakoumakis inside the box. Unfortunately for Punjab, the Greek striker’s shot struck the post and deflected out, keeping the score level.

Mohun Bagan Takes Full Control

Almost immediately, the Mariners made Punjab FC pay for their missed chance. In the 56th minute, Dippendu Biswas delivered a pinpoint cross from the right wing. Maclaren controlled the ball expertly before smashing it past Ravi Kumar, giving Mohun Bagan a crucial 1-0 lead.

A few minutes later, they doubled their advantage. In the 63rd minute, Liston Colaco made a brilliant run down the left flank and, from a tight angle, slotted the ball into the net. Since Greg Stewart was nearby, Punjab FC’s defenders hesitated, making it easier for Colaco to score.

Late Substitutions and Maclaren’s Second Goal

Hoping for a comeback, Punjab FC made two substitutions in the 72nd minute. Nihal Sudeesh and Muhammad Suhail replaced Melroy Assisi and Giakoumakis, injecting fresh energy into the attack.

In response, Molina brought on Jason Cummings in the 77th minute, replacing Stewart. Following these changes, Punjab FC enjoyed a brief period of attacking momentum. However, Mohun Bagan’s defense remained strong and denied any scoring opportunities.

In the final minutes, the Mariners sealed their victory. In the 90th minute, Punjab FC’s Asish Pradhan lost possession inside the box. Cummings quickly intercepted and passed the ball to Maclaren, who calmly slotted it past Ravi Kumar, completing his brace and securing the 3-0 win.

Maclaren Steals the Show

Jamie Maclaren was the standout performer, scoring two crucial goals and constantly threatening Punjab FC’s defense. Additionally, he contributed defensively with two tackles and completed three of his five passes.
