Indian Cricket Fraternity Marks 41st Anniversary Of 1983 World Cup Triumph

As India commemorates the 41st anniversary of its inaugural World Cup triumph, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah and former cricketer Kirti Azad expressed gratitude to the 1983 World Cup heroes for motivating future generations to represent the nation.

Today marks 41 years since India’s historic first World Cup victory led by legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev. Jay Shah shared on his official X account, “Reflecting on 41 years since India’s historic first World Cup victory under @therealkapildev’s leadership in 1983. A defining moment for Indian cricket that continues to inspire us all.”

Kirti Azad echoed similar sentiments on X, “#25thJune in #1983 India #WorldChampion #Cricket #41stAnniversary @KirtiAzaad @therealkapildev @RaviShastriOfc.”

The BCCI acknowledged this milestone as a significant moment in Indian cricket history. “#OnThisDay in 1983! A historic victory & a landmark moment for Indian cricket #TeamIndia led by @therealkapildev, were crowned champions for the very first time as they clinched the World Cup title,” stated the BCCI on X.

In the 1983 World Cup final against West Indies, India batted first and scored 183 runs. Despite a challenging target, India’s bowlers restricted West Indies to 140, securing a memorable 43-run victory. Kapil Dev lifting the trophy at Lord’s Cricket Ground remains an iconic moment for Indian fans.

Mohinder Amarnath was named Man of the Match for his all-round performance in the final, contributing with both bat and ball. Since its inception in 1975, India has been a consistent participant in the World Cup, with the tournament being held every four years.
