Mumbai Indians (MI) ended their losing spree on Sunday as they defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) in an electrifying IPL 2025 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium. A strange 19th-over collapse by DC gave MI a 12-run win, ending their losing run in style.
MI registered a dominating score of 205/5, courtesy a breathtaking 59 off 33 balls by Tilak Varma. DC, chasing 206, were in command at one stage, courtesy Karun Nair’s dashing 89-run innings. But once Nair got out in the 12th over, DC lost their tempo and went into disintegration.
Bumrah’s Last Over Wins It for Mumbai
Just when DC seemed to regroup, Jasprit Bumrah unleashed his brilliance in the 19th over, turning the game on its head. In a stunning sequence, Bumrah triggered three consecutive run-outs in the final three balls of the over, reducing DC to 193 all out. The collapse effectively sealed MI’s much-needed win.
Karun Nair Shines Despite Defeat
Even in defeat, Karun Nair was the player who shone for DC. Bought at ₹50 lakhs in the mega auction, Nair has enjoyed an excellent domestic season. Nair topped the run charts in the 2024 Vijay Hazare Trophy with 779 runs, five of which were centuries, at a strike rate of 124. He was also the hero of the Ranji Trophy with 863 runs and dominated the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Maharaja Trophy.
Spoking after the match, Nair explained:
“I felt confident. I felt like, you know, I’m well prepared to play in the IPL if given the opportunity. So it was all about me preparing the way that I’ve been all through the season and waiting for my chance. So I was doing my bit to prepare and be ready for the game.”
It’s always a difficult decision for the team to choose 11 or 12 players, and I’ve always had respect for that. For me, it was about preparing and maintaining the same process that I used, which has served me well, and just being ready to go out there and deliver for the team,” he said.
Chaos in the Stands: Fan Brawl Goes Viral
The game wasn’t lacking in off-field drama as well. There was a huge brawl between spectators in the stands, and images of the fight went viral on social media soon. In one of the videos, a woman was seen punching another person in the course of the fight.
Although the cause of the fight is still unclear, the video has created widespread debate online, further muddying an already heated matchday.
