Sunil Gavaskar emphasized the crucial role Jasprit Bumrah plays in India’s bowling attack, particularly regarding his fitness, ahead of the fifth Border-Gavaskar Test in Sydney. Gavaskar stated, “Look, if India scores more than 40 runs or they put 185 on the board, then they have a great chance. But it all depends on Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness.” He further added, “If Jasprit Bumrah is fit, then 145-150 might be enough. But if Jasprit Bumrah is not fit, then a score of around 200 also might not be enough.”

Gavaskar’s comments reflect Bumrah’s immense value to the team, noting his capability to control runs and take key wickets under pressure.

Prasidh Krishna confirmed that Bumrah had suffered a back spasm and undergone scans on Day 2 of the ongoing Test. “Yes, he had a back spasm, he had gone for scans. The medical team is monitoring him, so we will know whenever the medical team gets back to us,” Krishna said at the press conference.

Bumrah, currently in outstanding form, has taken 32 wickets in the series, becoming India’s highest wicket-taker in a Test series in Australia. He surpassed Bishan Singh Bedi’s record of 31 wickets from the 1977-78 tour, with a remarkable average of 12.64 and three five-wicket hauls, including his best performance of 6/76.

Bumrah’s performance on Day 2 included figures of 2/33 in 10 overs, but his injury forced him off the field. Virat Kohli stepped in as captain during his absence, showing the team’s adaptability.

Though Bumrah returned to the field, there is uncertainty over his ability to bowl in the second innings. The team’s medical staff is closely monitoring his condition, prioritizing both his health and the team’s needs. India, trailing 2-1 in the series, has one final chance to level the score and improve its World Test Championship standing, with Bumrah’s fitness likely to play a critical role.
