The uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma’s place in India’s playing XI for the final Test in Sydney deepened after head coach Gautam Gambhir revealed in Thursday’s pre-match press conference that no decision has yet been made.

Rohit’s poor form in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy has drawn significant criticism. The Indian captain has struggled to deliver impactful performances, particularly with the bat.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Rohit has managed just 31 runs at an average of 6.20 during this series, marking the lowest average recorded by a touring captain in a Test series in Australia (minimum five innings).

Speculation about Rohit’s potential exclusion from the playing XI has gained traction, especially amidst broader discussions about his leadership in the longer format and whispers of retirement.

Head coach Gambhir refrained from confirming Rohit’s inclusion but stated during the Sydney press conference, “We will take the Playing XI call after looking at the pitch tomorrow.”

The upcoming Sydney Test holds immense significance for India. Not only do they need a victory to level the series and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but their hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship final against South Africa also hinge on this game.

A failure to secure a win in the final Test, starting tomorrow, would result in India being eliminated from contention for the championship final, with Australia claiming both the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the final spot.
