Ex-Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal was taken to the hospital in an emergency after he suffered a huge heart attack while playing in a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match at Savar on Monday. The 36-year-old, who was captaining Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club at BKSP, complained of chest pain on the field.

Tamim Iqbal Complains of Chest Pain During Match

Tamim initially complained of chest pain during play and was promptly taken to a local hospital for assessment. He was subjected to an ECG and preliminary medical tests before being discharged. He, however, experienced discomfort once more on his return to the field and had to be hospitalized again.

Doctors Confirm Heart Attack, Surgery Underway

BCB chief doctor Debashish Chowdhury revealed that the cricketer experienced indications of cardiac problems in his initial blood test.

“He complained of having chest pain and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was checked and underwent an ECG,” Chowdhury said. “In the first blood test, there was a problem. He said he was feeling uncomfortable and wanted to go back to Dhaka. An ambulance was called in and when he was returning to the field from the hospital, he felt a pain in his chest again. He was then brought to the hospital for the second time and it seemed he had a massive heart attack. Now he is under observation at Fazilatunnesa Hospital.”

Tamim Iqbal to Undergo Stent Placement

Physicians have confirmed that Tamim is being operated on, and a stent will be inserted in his heart to clear a clogged artery and restore proper blood flow. His condition is under close supervision at Fazilatunnesa Hospital.

Following the incident, several Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) directors rushed to Savar, and the scheduled board meeting was postponed to Monday. The cricketing community and fans are sending prayers and best wishes for Tamim’s speedy recovery.
