French authorities have detained Egyptian wrestler Mohamed Elsayed early Friday morning on accusations of groping a woman at a Paris bar. The arrest occurred around 5 a.m. in the city’s 13th district, where Elsayed, 26, was apprehended after allegedly placing his hand on the woman’s buttocks.
Elsayed, who secured a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, had competed in the 67 kg Greco-Roman wrestling category at the Paris Games but lost to Azerbaijan’s Hasrat Jafarov. Jafarov subsequently claimed the bronze medal.
Reports suggest that Egyptian wrestler Elsayed was highly intoxicated at the time of the incident. The French newspaper Le Parisien described him as “roaring drunk.”
The Paris prosecutor’s office has yet to confirm whether Elsayed has been released following his arrest. The situation remains under investigation.
