Cameron Green is relieved after a back surgery and hopes it will be the last of his career. Ahead of his comeback in county cricket, Green is optimistic about his fitness and future with the Australian team. The 25-year-old all-rounder recently spoke to the media for the first time since he underwent surgery last October, talking about his recovery and aspirations.
Smooth Recovery and Fitness Updates of Cameron Green
Talking in Perth as part of Cricket Australia’s 2025-26 fixture release, Green disclosed that he would have been available for the Sheffield Shield final if Western Australia had made it.
“The surgery has been incredible,” Green stated. “I think I was probably off [my] legs for about two weeks. And after that, I’ve been doing gym work for the last four or five months, been running for the last two months, been batting for the last month. It’s been pretty seamless.”
Cameron Green explained that his choice to undergo surgery was to extend his cricketing career as well as to allow him to keep bowling without any breaks. He looked up to fellow Australian cricketers Jason Behrendorff and Ben Dwarshuis, who have both undergone the same treatment. and made successful recoveries.
Return to County Cricket and WTC Aspirations of Cameron Green
Cameron Green will play for Gloucestershire in a five-match county cricket assignment as he fights for a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa. Although he was Australia’s No. 4 batter in his previous Test in March 2024, scoring an unbeaten 174, he admits that Steven Smith’s resurgence to form at the No. 4 spot could require a reshuffling of the batting order.
With Travis Head being recalled to No. 5 and Josh Inglis and Beau Webster standing out in the middle order, Green might have to push himself up the batting order if picked for the WTC final.
“We’ve got an ultra-successful top five, six, seven, so it’s never easy,” Green admitted. “But that’s where you want it to be in a Test team.”
Nathan Lyon Battles Through Injury
In the meantime, Nathan Lyon gave an update on his recovery from a hip injury he suffered during the first Test against India in Perth. Lyon said he tore tissue off the fascia of his left hip and needed fluid drainage twice to deal with the pain. Although he missed the latter part of the Sheffield Shield, he is optimistic about his comeback in time for the WTC final.
Scott Boland Managing Knee Soreness
Scott Boland, another Australian bowling spearhead, has been experiencing knee pain that led him to miss the last round of the Sheffield Shield. Though he had a heavy bowling schedule during the summer, Boland is slowly getting his fitness back in preparation for the WTC final. He will be training in Brisbane with other non-IPL and county players.
Having been Australia’s best bowler in the final of the 2023 WTC against India, Boland is concerned with being available for the important upcoming matches.
“I think we’re going about it the right way,” Boland said. “If everything goes well, I’ll be right to go for that one Test in England and those three Tests in the Caribbean.”
With Green, Lyon, and Boland all making strides in their recovery, Australia is hoping to field a full-strength squad for the upcoming WTC final and beyond.
