At least five Cameroonian soldiers were killed and several others wounded in a border attack on Friday, officials said. The assault took place in the village of Bakinjaw in southwestern Cameroon and was allegedly carried out by armed Fulani herdsmen who crossed from Nigeria’s Taraba state.
According to Aka Martin Tyoga, the local Member of Parliament for the district, the attack was a revenge after Cameroonian forces allegedly killed several herders the previous day.
The traditional ruler of Bakinjaw, Agwa Linus, confirmed the attack and added that his home was also set on fire by the assailants. “This is not the first time they are attacking it’s very unfortunate,” he said.
An intensified series of violence in the region is part of the ongoing war, where issues of territorial clashes and tensions involving Cameroonian soldiers and Nigerian herders escalate. The instability has sparked a fear of another round of problems as both forces face security at the border.
