The esteemed spiritual leader, Jyotish Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Shri Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging for the reinstatement of the Vedic names of rivers in Jammu and Kashmir. In a letter dated February 20, the Shankaracharya emphasized the restoration of the ancient appellations of Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, and Indus rivers in the Union Territory.
Citing the profound historical and cultural significance of these sacred water bodies, Swami Shri Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati referenced excerpts from revered Hindu scriptures like the Shrimad Bhagwat Puran and the Rig Veda.
Expressing distress over the alteration of the names of these revered rivers, the Shankaracharya appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to undertake a momentous initiative to revive their original Vedic designations.
He underscored the importance of reinstating the Vedic names of the rivers flowing through Jammu and Kashmir, proposing ‘Asikni’ for Chenab, ‘Vitasta’ for Jhelum, ‘Parushni’ for Ravi, and ‘Sindhu’ for Indus.
